My 1970's Red Wool Coat
For our final in History of Fashion and Dress, I decided to use my mother's vintage wool coat. This coat has an inner lining and sleeve lining. There are back shoulder darts. The coat has 3 box pleats in back, a structured collar, front pockets, and is knee length. The coat tapers in at the waist and has belt loops from where a belt used to be. It is %80 wool and %20 nylon. The coat is in excellent condition. (except for the button I popped off)

History of the Coat
For our final in History of Fashion and Dress, I decided to use my mother's vintage wool coat. This is a red wool coat that was given to my mother in 1972 or 73, when she was a senior in high school, by my grandmother. It was bought at the Anchorage Nordstrom's for around . My mother had a few coats this length, one I can remember, was leather. She wore this for special occasions, or as a nice coat in the evenings. |
My Sentimental Coat Story
When I moved to Seattle, I decided that I wanted a nice wool coat to keep me warm. Fleece is great, and I have almost every article of clothing you could imagine made out of it, but it isn’t very good against the rain and never ending dampness. Seattle has this mist that’s just too light for an umbrella and too damp to keep you dry. I wanted a red wool coat, I don’t know why, but I had it in my mind that it had to be red. I kept looking for this one, none of the coats in all the stores seemed right. My mother indulged me and helped look for one. I didn’t find any I liked, so I spent that winter freezing, and wet, in fleece. When I came home for the summer, my mother said "What about that one in storage?" I didn’t know what she was talking about, but when I saw the red wool coat, I knew it was the one I was looking for. Without knowing it I was looking for that coat that I had seen so many years before. It was that coat, and it fit like a glove. It was the coat my grandmother had bought twenty-five years before for my mother. I showed grandma the coat at Christmas, about two weeks before she passed away. My grandmother just smiled and said "I was thinking of you when I bought it".

Inseam and Lable
I couldn't find much on the history of Alorna Coat Corporation. They still sell coats at department stores like Kaufmann's. A map to their NY headquaters can be found at http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?address=463%207TH%20AVE%20FL%202&city=NEW%20YORK&state=NY or their physical address is 463 7TH AVE FL 210018-7604 Tel: (212)290-4000 Fax: (212)290-4040 http://www.uniteunion.org/unionlabel/holidays.html said that Alorna coats are "Classic coats for the mature female shopper - faux fur trims, velvet detailing and a full fit available" I could find nothing on Holly Plush. |

Back Box Pleats
Lorraine, a costume goddess, informed me these are box pleats. They go across the shoulders and stop a bit above the waist for a little give in the coat. |
The 70's
After the innocence and drugs of the 60's, people seemed to come awake (or sober) for the 70's. The 70's started out rough with political turmoil. It was 1970 on May 4'th that four student were killed at Kent State. In '72 the Watergate scandal broke out and the equal rights amendment waited for ratification. By 1973 Women's rights scored a victory with Roe vs. Wade and in '74 Nixon resigns from the office. Finally in '75 the Vietnam war was "officially" over. The 70's was a time for people to bust out of what fashion and society had imposed on them. For the first time, people started to wear what they wanted to, instead of what the fashion moguls thought would be trendy. There started to be what we see a lot of now, everything. Everything started to be trendy. To trace back to your ethnic origins, to borrow from another time period, it was all good. I saw Lilly Tomlin in Seattle during her run of The Search for Intelligent Life In the Universe. During the show her mike broke down and she chatted with us while we waited. She said it was great that we were so eclectic, and that when she went to school if you didn’t have your matching patent leather shoes and handbag, you were just out of the loop. That was what the 70’s went through. The 70’s were what started the celebration of individuality that we have even now. There isn’t one style that we think is trendy, it’s individual style that’s cool. Bell bottoms came around, and the platforms, which are really from the 30’s, came back with a vengeance.
